In Maori legends/myths, Mauao didn't want to live near the mountains Puwhenua and Otanewainuku, so during the night Mauao was carried by fairies down to the ocean. But the journey took too long and the fairies were "caught by the dawn" and had to fly home. Mauao now sits and protects the entrance to the Tauranga harbour.
